Sour Album (Olivia Rodrigo) Book Tag

Twitter convinced me to listen to Olivia Rodrigo’s new album.

I have it on right now and so far I really like it!

Ashmita @ The Fictional Journal created a tag in honor of the album. This is what I’ve been working on instead of homework.

Here are the rules:

  • List the rules.
  • Show some love to the one who tagged you.
  • Mention the creator (Ashmita@the Fictional Journal) and link it back to the original post.
  • Nominate as many people you want and notify them by commenting on their posts.
  • Name a song that you have been listening to on repeat.
  • Have fun!

a book with a lot of teenage angst

I’m rereading Shadow and Bone for the first time in six years.

Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo

WOWEE, so much of the plot is just ANGST.

While political intrigue happens in the background, Alina bemoans her looks and complains about magic school.

I really feel like the adventure aspect of this book has been oversold.

a book that broke your heart, but you still keep going back to

I can’t love Carry On quite as ardently as I once did.

The #1 New York Times Bestseller Carry On by Rainbow Rowell

Not after reading that godawful sequel.

I try to pretend Wayward Son never happened.

Carry On is a standalone. Please don’t challenge this fantasy.

a book that helped you grow/ become who you are today

I did not like Finding God in the Waves when I first read it.

Finding God in the Waves: How I Lost My Faith and Found it Again Through Science by Mike McHargue

I was pretty horrified by Mike McHargue’s broad biblical interpretations.

I also couldn’t fathom having an intense spiritual experience only to remain an agnostic.

I understand it a little better now.

a book which was slow paced, but so addictive that you just couldn’t stop reading it

The Invisible Life of Addie Larue is pretty boring. I can’t help rolling my eyes at the prose.

The Invisible Life of Addie Larue by V. E. Schwab

Addie’s NOT LIKE THE OTHER GIRLS with her leather jacket and her thievery. She likes ART, not BABIES.

That said, I can’t stop reading this book.

a book that makes you nostalgic

We did a Robert Frost Unit in my 7th Language Arts class.

Stopping By Woods on a Snowy Evening by Robert Frost, illustrated by Susan Jeffers

Instead of studying the text of “Stopping By Woods on a Snowy Evening,” our teacher read the Susan Jeffers illustrated version aloud to us.

I liked any book with a horse in it back then, so this became a fast favorite.

a book you almost dnf-ed but it became your favorite

Last year, I fell into a six-month reading slump that lasted the summer and most of the fall.

I’d started A Song of Wraiths and Ruin shortly after its release but couldn’t make much progress.

A Song of Wraiths and Ruin by Roseanne A Brown

I considered DNF-ing it a few times.

I’m glad I didn’t.

The last 100 pages are AMAZING.

a book that lived up to your incredibly high expectations.

I’ve seen Kai Ashante Wilson’s A Taste of Honey on numerous lists.

A Taste of Honey by Kai Ashante Wilson

It was recommended to me so many times, I finally bought it.

At first, I wasn’t into the story. The book definitely wasn’t what I’d expected.

Then, toward the end, I understood the hype.

This book is very good.

a book/series which cause a book hangover

I am no longer alive.

I am a partially-rotted corpse holding a pristine copy of The Echo Wife in my hand.

The Echo Wife by Sarah Gailey, Bestselling author of Magic for Liars: A life is a dangerous thing to share.

This book destroyed me.

There’s a lot to unpack in the book’s 250 pages: medical ethics, emotional abuse, gender roles, cloning, power dynamics…

Why am I surprised that Sarah Gailey has wrecked me ONCE AGAIN?

a world you would sell your books to be a part of

I’ve been watching HBO’s His Dark Materials and infodumping about the books to my friend.

I forgot how much I love this series.

His Dark Materials Book 1: The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman

Even though the world of His Dark Materials has cliff-ghasts and an oppressive theocracy, I would like to live there!

Mostly I want a daemon!

I took the BBC’s official interactive daemon quiz and got a SILK MOTH.

YUCK, I don’t want a MOTH!

Sure, their read of my personality was accurate, but a MOTH??

I also downloaded the My Daemon app and that gave me a Capuchin monkey.

CAN I GET A CURLY DOG OR SOMETHING, PLEASE?

𝔽𝔸𝕍𝕆ℝ𝕀𝕋𝔼 ℂℝ𝕀𝕄𝔼

a favorite series, but a really disappointing last book

Wow, I thought the last Daughter of Smoke and Bone book was so bad.

Dreams of Gods and Monsters by Laini Taylor

I’m tempted to unhaul my copy of the third book.

I was disappointed that I’d missed out on Illumicrate’s special editions of the books until I thought about owning a fancy version of Dreams of Gods and Monsters.

Just…what was the POINT of that book??

ℍ𝕆ℙ𝔼 π•Œβ„ 𝕆𝕂

a book that healed you/ your comfort book

Winter’s Orbit is a perfect book.

Winter's Orbit by Everina Maxwell: One match can light up an empire

First of all, I am fully obsessed with the Arranged Marriage/Accidental Love trope.

Second, this book is very angsty in the best way.

Third, I really loved the way this book championed abuse survivors and gave them a happy ending.

I listened to the audiobook and loved it; I plan to buy a physical copy.

New favorite comfort read.

I put Sour on repeat.

I hope you all are happy.

It appears I chose an SFF book for almost every prompt? I…did not realize.

As for a song I’ve been listening to on repeat, I can’t stop playing “Creepin Up the Backstairs” by The Fratellis. It’s so catchy and fun.

I’d like to know about your favorite songs and see what books you chose for the prompts.

If you do this, please tag meee.

Lastly, stream Sour. It’s incredible.
