TOP TEN TUESDAY: Last 10 Books I Abandoned

This is my first Top Ten Tuesday in several months!

I’m going for a broad interpretation of “abandoned” today.

The following are books I DNFed, set aside, gave away, or purged from my collection.

Reign of the Fallen by Sarah Glenn Marsh

I have been pretty good this year about not DNFing books.

I’ve also tried to stop referring to books as “good” and “bad.” Either I like something or it wasn’t for me.

Reign of the Fallen is bad.

The plot is erratic and makes absolutely no sense.

After 90 pages, I still couldn’t figure out how the world worked.

Looks like I will NOT be finishing this series.

Witches of Ash and Ruin by E. Latimer

I haven’t fully abandoned this one.

I thought this would be a speed read; sadly, I can’t get more than 50 pages in.

Also, I already know who the murderer is and I’m not feeling the romance at all.

I’ll come back to this book eventually.

(This is the second book with a bi protagonist that I’ve felt let down by.)

The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee

I tossed this book on the giveaway pile after Mackenzi Lee started defacing books by authors of color.

Lee has caused a ruckus before; for me, this was too far.

His Hideous Heart edited by Dahlia Adler

I liked this anthology a lot when it first came out.

I will probably never reread it.

The only story that stood out to me was Rin Chupeco’s take on The Murders in the Rue Morgue.

(I sometimes think about The Fall of the House of Usher, even though I don’t WANT to.)

Also, and I hate to say this because I’ll lose all my goth cred…I’m not a huge fan of Poe, either the author or the Star Wars character.

I don’t know what to tell you.

Elysium Girls by Kate Pentecost

I wanted a Mad Max-esque thrill ride.

This book was Mad Max-esque.

I Wish You All the Best by Mason Deaver

I decided to give this book a shot after winning a copy in a giveaway.

I read it and didn’t feel anything – not joy, not hatred. I was a pit of nothing while reading this book.

It’s on the Powell’s pile to be resold whenever I’m allowed to travel again.

Heart of Iron by Ashley Poston

I’m really enjoying this book and I haven’t fully abandoned it.

I’m just…taking a break.

The plot was exciting and everything, but for some reason I wasn’t feeling it.

I think I’m still grieving the final Star Wars trilogy, to be honest.

I couldn’t bring myself to engage with Star Wars content on May the 4th.

Reading this wacky space adventure feels a bit too close to the trilogy that broke my heart.

The Gilded Wolves by Roshani Chokshi

I REALLY like this book and it will probably make my end of the year top ten list.

However, I like the characters TOO much and am now worried about what will happen to them.

I can’t handle that kind of stress right now.

There Will Come a Darkness by Katy Rose Poole

I touched on my issues with this book in a previous post: the queer couple seems to be headed for tragedy while the super-boring straight couple keeps getting page time.

I’m not into it. (The straight couple is SO BORING.)

Sure, I’ll finish this book, but it’s no longer a priority.

Belle Revolte by Linsey Miller

I’m so bored with this book.

I think about continuing and can’t bring myself to do it.

Jury’s our on whether or not I’ll finish.

Whoopsy-daisy, I just participated in a sapphic book exchange AND received my copy of The Fascinators in the mail!

Sorry, unread books. You’ll have to wait a bit longer.

Author:

She/her. Lover of cheese and performative angst. I love to call out, complain, overreact, analyze, and reimagine. This site contains the fruit of that labor.
