After the UMC vote in February, I turned to a classic coping mechanism.
That’s right: I made a Spotify playlist.
You can listen to it, if you want. I titled it Methodist Despair.
My feelings about the vote were complex and sometimes explicit.
I didn’t know what else to do, so I turned to music to communicate feelings I couldn’t access.
If you feel as disappointed in the Methodist church as I do, this playlist is for you.
“Fuck Authority” by Pennywise
You know the time is right to take control
We got to take offense against the status quo
No way, not gonna stand for it today
Fight for your rights, it’s time we had our say
“My Church” by Maren Morris
Can I get a hallelujah
Can I get an amen
Feels like the Holy Ghost running through ya
When I play the highway FM
I find my soul revival
Singing every single verse
Yeah I guess that’s my church
“Drunk Girls Don’t Cry” by Maren Morris
You say he saw the light, the slate is clean
He swears up and down that it’s gonna be
Different this time
That’s like saying drunk girls don’t cry
“All Time Low” by Jon Bellion
“Breathe Me” by Sia
Ouch, I have lost myself again
Lost myself and I am nowhere to be found
Yeah, I think that I might break
Lost myself again and I feel unsafe
“Without Me” by Halsey
You know I’m the one who put you up there
Name in the sky
Does it ever get lonely
Thinking you could live without me
“Without You” from Rent
The mind churns, the heart yearns
The tears dry, without you
Life goes on, but I’m gone
‘Cause I die without you
“Mr. Brightside” by the Killers
Swimming through sick lullabies
Choking on your alibi
But it’s just the price I pay
Destiny is calling me
Open up my eager eyes
‘Cause I’m Mr. Brightside
“I Hate You” from If/Then
I hate you, I hate you,
I love you, I hate you,
don’t do it, I need you
Forget it, I know you
My God how I hate you
Don’t leave me, I love you
Don’t say that you love me
‘Cause what does it matter
“This Was a Home Once” by Bad Suns
This was a home once
Can I say something to change your mind?
This was a home once
All these years go by and I’ve been blind
“Growing Pains” by Coin
You’ll never know
You’ll never know
You’ll never know
You’ll never know
What kind of person I become when you’re gone, oh
