REMEMBER THE LIEBSTER AWARD?

I’VE BEEN NOMINATED ONCE AGAIN, this time by my friend Emer from A Little Haze Book Blog.

Emer is super nice, VERY well-read, and stans Star Wars. WHAT MORE COULD YOU WANT IN A BLOGGER?

A quick description of the award:

“The Liebster Award is an award that exists only on the internet and is given to bloggers by other bloggers. The earliest case of the award goes as far back as 2011. Liebster in German means sweetest, kindest, nicest, dearest, beloved, lovely, kind, pleasant, valued, cute, endearing, and welcome.”

1. If you could choose any bookish character to fight in your place in a match to the death who would it be and why?

I would have to choose…

…RONAN LYNCH.

His dad taught him how to fight.

And he fought Adam’s abusive father that one time!

He also has [abilities spoiler] and can call [creature spoiler] from [setting spoiler].

I AM CONFIDENT that Ronan would make a good champion.

 

2. Who is your favourite band/singer/musician?

I am swallowing so much unnecessary shame to write these next words:

Pop-era Taylor Swift is my favorite artist.

I’ve listened to Lover over a dozen times.

I find Swift’s songs very comforting.

 

3. What are your feelings on people who say that Young Adult fiction does not compare quality-wise to Adult fiction?

UGH.

I hate that some people (e.g., Seattle Presbyterians) attribute a lack of maturity, intelligence, and talent to Young Adult readers.

Listen up, snobs:

YA makes it easier for me to read historical fiction (a genre I normally hate), publishes diverse queer and feminist books, and offers books at a MUCH cheaper price than general fiction.

AND YA fiction is often just as well-written as adult fiction, minus the heavy-handed pretension.

Oh, and YA fantasy > adult fantasy.

I can’t STAND adult high fantasy. More on that in a minute.

 

4. Your home is on fire. Thankfully all your family, friends and pets (other sentient beings) are safe. You just have enough time to rescue three things from the blaze. What would you rescue and why?

I live in a VERY small apartment, which already limits the items I can save.

In some ways that makes this question easier, but it also makes each potential loss more devastating.

If I HAD to choose three things to grab, I’d pick

• My wallet – I have IDs and debit cards in there, along with…my library card and my bookstore rewards punch cards. Listen, I get to prioritize.
• “Adulting” folder – This contains some super important documents that I would hate to lose.
• Jean jacket – Of all the clothes I own, this jacket is the gayest…and it has hundreds of dollars worth of pins on it. It’s basically my personality in a jacket.

 

5. You’re away at a peaceful spa retreat. What three relaxing reads would you choose to take with you?

Hm…that’s a good question!

I would definitely bring Everything Leads to You, because I love it so much and take it on vacation all the time.

Something New is another obvious favorite that I love to reread.

And, for my wildcard pick…Chasing Redbird by Sharon Creech!

It’s wholesome. I like it a lot.

 

6. What are your favourite pizza toppings?

I used to love pepperoni and bacon, but I no longer eat meat.

I now love fresh mushrooms and alternative sauces. Pesto pizza? THE BEST. Alfredo? Delicious. Olive oil? I’ll take it.

And…I love extra cheeses, especially feta and parmesan.

Whoops.

 

7. We are sending a capsule into space in the hopes that an alien species will find it and communicate with us. What three books that best represent the good and the bad of humanity should be placed in the capsule?

I love this question.

BOOK 1: The Prophecy of the Stones by Flavia Bujor

This book addresses the importance of courage and self-sacrifice and there’s a big ol’ war between good and evil. Hot girls, prophecies, and magic – it’s fantasy literature encapsulated in one book.

BOOK 2: Home of the Brave by Katherine Applegate

Hey there, aliens. This is how people in my home country react to foreigners!

BOOK 3: Annihilation by Jeff Vandermeer

Let’s get the aliens up to speed on how humans assume they will act.

 

8. What genre of books is your least favourite to read?

My least favorite books spend more time on worldbuilding than developing the plot and characters.

I see this happening most often in hard sci-fi and high fantasy.

WHICH IS WHY I don’t often read fantasy doorstoppers and/or tech-y sci-fi novels like The Martian.

I DON’T CARE ABOUT THE MINUTIAE OF BIOLOGY AND/OR ELF GOVERNMENT.

I’m also finding I don’t like contemporaries very much.

I need a compelling plot.

If a book’s just a slice-of-life about people throwing shade, I will see myself out.

 

9. Do you like to read spoilers before you read a book?

If I know I’m never going to read a book and it has a controversial plot twist that people keep talking about, I look up spoilers.

Otherwise, I hate spoilers. Don’t ruin the surprise!

 

10. How do you feel about books that end on a cliffhanger?

Are we talking about cheesy YA cliffhangers that leave room for a sequel?

Hate those. Finish your story and write a follow-up LATER.

Do what Carry On did and tie up your loose ends.

 

11. The sign says do not press the button. Do you press the button?
