I packed several dozen books for housesitting.
Guess how many of them I read?
I had such ambitions!
Zezee did this TBR-themed book tag on her blog and I guess I feel like shaming myself.
At the very least, because I drafted this post so long ago, I’ve since read some of these books! Huzzah!
A BOOK YOU KEEP SAYING YOU WILL READ… BUT DON’T
Alexandria Bellefleur put out two follow-ups to Written in the Stars.
I see them at the bookstore ALL THE TIME and I still have not read either one.
If I’m being honest, I kind of don’t want to.
(Update: I started Hang the Moon and promptly DNFed.)

A BOOK YOU KEEP SAYING YOU WILL READ… BUT HAVEN’T
It took me until 2020 to finally pick of Heart of Iron.
I have been putting off Soul of Stars since then.
I am…afraid.
I have been disappointed by so many duologies.
I don’t want to be let down again.

A BOOK YOU WANT TO READ… BUT DON’T HAVE YET
The Ruthless Lady’s Guide to Wizardry has stoked my interest in C. M. Waggoner’s debut, Unnatural Magic.
As I just decided to read this book, I don’t have it.
I haven’t even looked for it in my library system.
(Update: The Ruthless Lady’s Guide to Wizardry had a super disappointing ending, so I’m less interested in Unnatural Magic.)

A BOOK THAT YOU HAVEN’T SEEN REVIEWED… BUT SOUNDS GOOD
I haven’t seen anyone review The Bennet Women but it looks fun!
I love a Jane Austen retelling.

A BOOK THAT’S BEEN ON YOUR TBR FOR YEARS
I have been threatening to read State of Wonder for nigh on seven years.
MIGHT THIS BE THE YEAR?
(Update: I FINALLY READ THIS. I am not sure how to talk about it. Dr. Annick Swenson earned my undying loathing. I hate her with every fiber of my being. She can kick rocks.)

A BOOK THAT INTIMIDATES YOU… BUT SOUNDS AMAZING
I keep going back and forth about buying The Eye of the World.
At the very least, I could pick up a used mass market paperback somewhere.
I want to get into this series, but it’s so long and the books have so many pages.
Also, my college nemesis was a big Wheel of Time fan, so I am prejudiced.
(Update: It took me WEEKS but I FINISHED THIS. It was fine. I enjoyed poking fun at it with my brother. I’m invested enough that I will read at least one sequel. In fact, I found a used copy of The Great Hunt at Third Place Books! What a treat!)

A BOOK THAT WAS RECOMMENDED… BUT HAVEN’T HAD A CHANCE TO READ YET
My coworker sent me a copy of Bentley Little’s The Burning.
She really liked it.
I don’t usually read horror, but it looks neat.

A BOOK YOU’RE NOT SURE OF… BUT WILL GIVE A CHANCE
Antique Roman is a gay Hamlet retelling.
I’m having trouble finding a copy.
I’m afraid it’s going to be really hardcore literary.
However…GAY HAMLET RETELLING.

A BOOK YOU WOULDN’T NORMALLY CHOOSE… BUT ARE CURIOUS ABOUT
I hate historical fiction most of the time, even the magic kind.
HOWEVER…Bacchanal fascinates me.
I kiiind of want to read it.

A BOOK YOU’VE READ… BUT NEED TO FINISH THE SERIES
I’ve had it drilled into me several times that I need to finish the Throne of Glass series.
I own Crown of Midnight! I just haven’t felt like reading it!

A BOOK YOU THINK YOU’LL LOVE… BUT KEEP PASSING UP
Every review of The Dragon Republic that I’ve seen on TikTok has been either “DAMN YOU, R. F. KUANG” or “NOPE.”
I am not emotionally ready for this book.

BONUS: A BOOK YOU’RE REALLY EXCITED TO READ
I’m really pumped to read The Girl in the Tower!
Eventually!
I’ve been on a fantasy kick!
Let’s see how long it lasts!
Well…I knocked some books off my TBR and there are still too many
What a delightful problem to have.
I have engaged in a rereading project, so I’ll get to these other books when I get to them.
I have yet to read anything by Ann Patchett despite several recommendations BECAUSE the first I learned of her was during a short-story writing workshop series I signed up to that was full of mostly well-off white het cis women, including one who said we should, “Stop talking about race and gender like they matter so much,” after I shared that I became a fan of sci fi once I realised I didn’t like sci fi written by old straight white dudes. 😛
Ann Patchett came up the next class and the people in the room who gushed the most about her were the very same who nodded in agreement to the comment that race and gender don’t matter so……
Also, the same group LOVED The Goldfinch, which was one of the single most tedious books I have ever read. *laughs*
But who knows, maybe she’s fine and I’d like her stuff. Maybe.

I REMEMBER YOU TALKING ABOUT THAT CLASS. It sounded SO AWFUL. Nothing against Ann Patchett but like…she’s totally one of those authors who older white women consider knowledgeable about The Issues when there are…other perspectives. I don’t remember if I called her Book Club Fodder in this post but it fits.
NO, NOT THE GOLDFINCH. Lord. I saw a TikTok that was like, “I’ve read the big three: The Goldfinch, The Luminaries, and A Little Life,” and I just…DON’T WANT TO READ ANY OF THOSE.

IMO, The Goldfinch is about 250 pages too long and dull AF. And pointless. And all the characters are terrible people.

This sounds like a lot of fun and maybe I’ll do it too 😍😍😍
But I so relate to you … I just keep putting off sequels, especially after loving first books and it’s become my shtick lol 😂 let’s see if I change that anytime soon..

Loool it’s almost like we’re trying to recreate the space between each book’s release. Let’s say it’s that.
