THINGS THAT BRING ME JOY: “Elite” Season Three

My friend Shane started watching “Elite” and has been sending me Marco Polo messages about it.

This is cause for celebration.

I’ve been in love with “Elite” since season one and I haven’t been able to share it with any of my friends until now!

Season three of “Elite” just came out on Netflix. Last night, I watched three episodes. Today, I plan to binge the rest.

I feel a LOT of things and I don’t know where to start, so I’m going to talk about each character individually.

[Note: though there will be some spoilers for earlier seasons, I won’t spoil anything too dire so others can watch the show and still be surprised.]

General feelings

The cast is dwindling fast.

Marina only shows up in that dance video, Christian is still at Swiss motorcycle recovery camp, Nano left the country, and Samu’s mom just bailed.

Also: I swear the adult actors keep changing. I don’t recognize a single one.

This season opens at the graduation party with someone falling THROUGH A WINDOW to their death on the dance floor.

Best season opening EVER.

The bulk of the season takes place five months earlier, leaving the audience to figure out who died and why they were killed.

My current theory is that it was a Murder On the Orient Express-type group effort. I don’t love this twist, but it makes thematic sense.

Another thing: I feel like season two set up some interesting relationships that aren’t being explored here.

More specifically: Nadia and Valerio are with other people, which is SUPREMELY DISAPPOINTING. I like them together!

With that out of the way, it’s time to talk about characters.

Carla

Carla

I’ve been pretty neutral about Carla up til now.

I considered her the least interesting of the alpha bitches, even when season two threw her into an unlikely relationship.

I feel for her now.

Her dad keeps putting her in difficult positions, her ex-boyfriends are being super needy, and she just feels guilty and confused all the time.

I’m a bit suspicious of her at the moment – was she responsible for the defenestration? – but I’m more interested in watching her than I was before.

Her love interest, though, is this overeager new money dating app whiz kid and I haaate him.

(I feel like part of this is because I’ve been conditioned to believe unavailable boys are the best romantic leads and Yeray is WAY too overeager.)

Hear me out: Yeray loves Carla because she left a nice comment on his Instagram when he was fat.

He’s been obsessed with her since then.

He keeps moaning about how he loves Carla so much and wants to buy her whatever she wants, the complains that she only wants him for his money.

I HATE YOUR STUPID VEST AND YOUR BACKWARDS BASEBALL CAP.

I hope Carla catches a break. She’s having a hard time.

Samuel

Samuel

I realize Samuel is ALSO having a hard time, but boy is getting on my nerves.

He keeps mooning over his season two girl and I need him to stop.

You were in love with a COMPLETELY different person in season one and you kept thinking about her during season two; you’re doing the EXACT SAME THING this season!

The cops recently got involved in Samu’s life and I hate it. Leave the boy alone! His mom left the country to be with his brother!

He has a romance happening with a THIRD girl and I am worried he is just humoring her.

Please don’t break both of our hearts.

Guzman

Guzman

I am…upset.

Guzman was my favorite character in seasons one and two.

He’s slipping in the ranks this season.

Guzman was always kind of a Knight Templar, but he was also a great friend and brother.

Now, all he cares about is revenge.

Also, he still has feelings for Nadia and I JUST DON’T CARE. They have NEGATIVE chemistry!

He’s having rage blackouts, so I feel like he’s the murderer. That theory seems way too simple, though.

He pulls off the school uniform really well. I have never looked that good in red pants.

Also, there’s a shot of him in the locker room wearing a Speedo. I didn’t need it, but I sure appreciated it.

Valerio

(CW: dubious consent, sexual abuse)

Valerio

Valerio is still a Disaster who is SEEMINGLY hurtling toward character growth.

Maybe. Possibly. He spent two episodes living in a luxury vehicle.

Also, he was sexually humiliated by a drug dealer, so that was gross! He did NOT consent to that power imbalance!

I ship Valerio with pretty much everyone except for one character.

ODDLY ENOUGH, in the flash-forwards, THAT character happens to be his love interest of the season!!

I really need to know how this came to be.

Lu

Lucrecia

I love Lu. She’s my favorite type of alpha bitch.

This season, her world is completely crumbling, leading Lu to make surprising alliances.

Sadly, she hasn’t had a whole lot of screen time.

There are two friendships I want the show to pursue. I hope they focus on Lu more in the latter half of the season.

Rebeca

Rebeca

Rebeca might be my favorite female character.

She goes to the club wearing a gold bomber jacket and dangly earrings that spell “SEX.”

SHE IS INDOMITABLE. I LOVE HER SO.

Also, she might be bi? WHAT IS THIS.

Rebe keeps befriending the Elite boys.

She’s in on all their wicked plots now, so thanks, show!

She deserves the best!

Speaking of…she’s been in love with Samu forever and I feel like this can’t end well.

Between Samu and her mom’s drug empire, the show keeps hinting at unhappy endings for Rebe.

WHY CAN’T YOU JUST LET HER BE HAPPY?

Cayetana

Cayetana

Cayetana finally has my attention and that’s all I want to say about her.

She’s in a WILDLY different place in the flash-forwards than she is in the flashbacks and I NEED to know what happened.

I’m curious where she’s getting all these great clothes?

Is she seriously making all of them by hand?

Nadia

Nadia

Nadia’s natural hair looks SO GOOD. She’s gorgeous.

Nadia starts the season with a REAL WEIRD meet-cute: she watches a black teen enter her store, confronts him, and has to apologize for racially profiling him.

Romance!

I was really into said love interest, Malick, until he started being pushy and condescending. He’s a good Muslim who takes liberties with the rules: cool. He’s also potentially queerphobic: NOT COOL.

I really hope Nadia doesn’t excuse the latter.

She’s finally growing a spine and a personality.

In season one, I thought she was the least developed of the three scholarship kids. This season, she might be my favorite.

On a different note: I HATE HER PARENTS, ESPECIALLY HER DAD.

I look askance at any parent who kicks their kid out of the house.

Nadia’s dad did this to TWO of his kids and he’s hinted that he might not let Nadia go to college?

I HATE HIM SO MUCH.

Omar

Omar

I legitimately forgot Nadia and Omar are siblings. They greeted each other at the club and I was so confused, because I couldn’t remember them being friends?

OH, RIGHT, THE DAD KICKED OMAR OUT OF THE HOUSE FOR BEING GAY AND NADIA TOOK HER DAD’S SIDE.

Uuuggghhh.

Omar is trying to be a good boyfriend…and that’s about it. Even though he seems happier out of the closet, he’s no longer the complicated drug dealer from season one.

It’s not so much that I want more angst. I just want him to do something that doesn’t revolve around his boyfriend.

Could you…I don’t know, shave your head or something? Grow your goatee back out?

Ander

Ander

Oh my sweet baby Ander.

Remember when Ander’s biggest problem was not liking tennis?

Ander is going through a hard time and making choices and I am trying not to judge him for it.

I don’t know how to feel about his romantic relationship.

On one hand, they’re teenagers who’ve experienced a lot of trauma. On the other…have they ever been nice to each other? It’s really hard to watch.

Ander seems like he’s doing better in the flash-forwards, so I hope things improve for him overall.

He made a new friend, at least? That’s something!

Polo

Polo

My feelings for Polo have been all over the place.

Season one, I didn’t really care about him.

Season two, I hated him.

Season three…I’m starting to feel bad for him.

I really don’t know what to do with all these feelings. Dare I say Polo is the most sympathetic character this season?

I NEVER THOUGHT I’D SAY THAT.

His wardrobe, though, is atrocious. The man loves colorblocking WAY too much. I DO NOT approve.

LEAVE THE SUSPENDERS ALONE FOR ONE DAY.

I’m about to watch the rest of the season and I am NOT READY.

Fingers crossed that my favorite characters make it out alive.

And, man, I HOPE it’s not an Agatha Christie conspiracy!

Author:

She/her. Lover of cheese and performative angst. I love to call out, complain, overreact, analyze, and reimagine. This site contains the fruit of that labor.
