January Books-of-the-Month Club

I had a decent January, not in the least because I got to celebrate my birthday with a trillion new books.

I read almost 30 books this month and I loved most, if not all, of them.

I wanted to see if I could narrow down my favorites to five books.

Solving Spiritual Debates

Over plates of mediocre spaghetti, I hear a familiar discussion start. A fellow Christian (usually male, shaking his head sadly) puts his fork down and bellows, “The body of Christ is so¬†FRACTURED!”

The rest of the table pauses. I munch on a corner of garlic bread.

“How can we have UNITY in the church,” the man continues, “if we’re all SEPARATE!?”

How to Talk to Women in Their 20s

Church people hate me.

At least, it’s hard not to feel that way as a single woman.

For over a year, I’ve watched people panic when I show up without a partner. I’ve been asked, “Soooooo hooooooow’s wooooooork?” more times than I can count. I’ve had others explain things to me that I already understand.

I thought I was the problem. I doubled-down on small talk, asked lots of questions, brought wine to Bible study.

Still I got panicked smiles, questions about college, the dreaded, “Hoooooooow’s work?”

I thought, Maybe these people are uncomfortable around singles.
